awk makes quick work of translating an edl into a filter string or series of ss/to for ffmpeg so IMO either way this is best left to a shell script. This seems like it might be tricky to implement cleanly in cTiVo, you'd have to munge the user's own filter settings with aselect/select/setpts/asetpts and if someone tried to do their own aseletct/select filter, they'd be in for a surprise. I know I could probably use the builtin commercial detection of MythTV but I don't mind doing it by hand for the few shows I do archive just to know they are 100%. My source material for this is standard mpg files generated by MythTV. It doesn't give you the customization of comskip (in comskip, you can turn every possible detection feature on or off and fine tune it however you want) but I'm not disappointed in its accuracy even without tuning.
